Resale Rights: Using Expired Royalty-Free Content to Generate Passive Income
Posted on | June 4, 2010 |
Do you know the most common characteristic of all highly successful information business owners?
They all sell products beyond their core services. Watch almost any successful coach, author, speaker, or consultant, and you will see they are constantly releasing new e-books, e-courses, home-study courses, audio programs, and other information products.
Why? Because products allow you to multiply your time on an exponential scale. Instead of only getting paid based on the number of hours you spend working with clients, you get paid even when you’re not delivering personal services. It’s like cloning yourself hundreds of times over to deliver your message to people all over the world.
But if you’re like many professionals I’ve talked to, chances are you haven’t created products for a couple different reasons…
- Perhaps you’re already so busy working with clients and trying to promote your business, that there just isn’t time left in the day to spend coming up with ideas, doing the extensive research, and actually writing quality information products.
- You may be struggling just to make ends meet. And when clients are your only source of revenue, you get caught in a vicious cycle of constantly working with clients and trying to bring in new ones.
- You may simply just not know what to create. Or if you do have an idea, there are so many elements you have to bring together in a clear way that it’s easy to get overwhelmed and not know what to do.
I love creating information products, but I know how time-consuming it can be. It took me 3 months to write my first e-book, and a whole year to develop my first home-study course.
And that’s just products. What about marketing content, such as articles, newsletters, press releases, video, audio, teleseminars, and other content to market your business? You’d think that we’re in a content creation business!
But as I said before, coaching is a content-driven business, and in order to get visibility and credibility in your niche market, you need to create content.
Here’s something else I discovered – resale rights. Basically, you can take e-books, articles, and text written by someone else (usually with expired copyright) and make them your own. In fact, for a whole year I scouted antique book stores looking for old self-help books. I was shocked to find texts that could have easily been written today, on topics such as:
Self-improvement
Time Management
Dating and Relationships
Success Strategies
Personal Efficiency
Innovation and Creativity
Sales and Communication
Leadership
Goal Setting
Spirituality
Procrastination
Organizing
Health and Wellness
Retirement
Investing
Depression
Public Speaking
Self-improvement is not new. Around the turn of last century there was literally an explosion in new ways of thinking about things. It was a revolutionary time when people began exploring the human mind and what motivates it more deeply than ever before. A lot of the ideas and concepts we hear about today for becoming successful and living a happy are not new at all. You can easily trace them back to this period in history.
These are the same ideas and strategies that are used by coaches today. And when you get the rights to the content you can do just about whatever you want with it. For example, you could:
- Put your own name on the content as author.
- Sell as many copies of the content to others as you want to,
- Give the content away
- Bundle it with other content to create special package deals or bonus offers to go along with your regular products or services.
- Edit and rewrite the content to make it targeted and unique.
Here are my personal 10 favorite ideas of how to make the most out of resale rights material:
- Create A Mini-Course
- Extract Articles From The Content
- Use The Content on Your Web Site
- Add The Content To Your Membership Site
- Customize The Content With Your Own Examples And Illustrations
- Package Your royalty-free Content With A Workbook, Checklist, Assessment, Or Any Other Coaching Tool
- Extract Important Points From The Content Create A PowerPoint Presentation
- Use The Material As A Bonus For Your Other Coaching Products Or Programs
- Create A Coaching Program Based On The Material’s Concepts
- Insert Your Existing Articles Into The Material To Expand And Customize It For Your Target Audience
- Insert coaching questions to make your readers think and interact with the product.
- Get your readers into action by adding implementation exercises.
- Sequence the content into series of steps to create a coaching process.
- Create a conversation with your reader by inserting “Coach’s Notes”throughout the product.
- Include a “15-minute question answered by e-mail” bonus with the product you sell.
In other words, don’t just sell products – turn each product into a coaching product that pre-sells your services!

The hardest part for this technique is to find a quality content.
I don’t want my name or brand to be on something that’s just garbage. But it’s a great leverage.
I actually have 1 book based from this technique.
Thanks!
