Hey, how are you feeling about your website these days? Is it working for you?

Your website should be more than an online brochure or a place where you point prospective clients now and then. It should be the hub of your business. One that:

Showcases your brand and specialties.

Inspires visitors to engage with you.

Creates an online community of fans who refer others.

Daily increases your list with people who truly want to hear from you.

Fills your group programs and brings you new clients, even while you sleep!

Well that might seem obvious. But I often hear from entrepreneurs that their website is just sitting there, doing nothing for them and they don’t know why. Many say that it took so much time and money to create, and now… they don’t even really know what it has on it.

I’m familiar with that disconnect. That was me, 13 years ago when I launched my first coaching website. Now, my main website is a blog. With all the fresh content and social network plug-ins, it’s a happy command center for my business. Most everything I do, plus all the clients and joint venture offers I attract, come and go from that hub. It’s like a busy airport and I’m really proud of it. (It even won the Best Coaching Blogs contest in 2010 and 2011.)

Everyone can have a website like that, whether you want a blog or a static website, and usually it just takes a few tweaks to get it really working for you. There are three “secret” ingredients every website must have going for it…

3 Things That Must Be Immediately Obvious on Your Site

This will just take a minute… pull up your website right now, if you’ve got one. Then do your best to answer these questions from the perspective of your target audience.

  1. Will new web visitors, that I’ve never met, immediately know who I serve?

Within seconds, is it crystal clear by your company name, tagline or position statement, blog titles, product titles… everything, who this website will be beneficial for?

  1. Does my free offer and opt-in box attract my eye without scrolling?

Does the title of your freebie make people hungry to grab it right now?

Are you solving a very specific problem that’s urgent for your niche market?

  1. After they sign up on my list is it obvious how to take the next step with me?

Usually this comes in the form of auto-responders, but your site should also showcase your programs in a way that’s easy to navigate and understand.

We live in an online social networking era. Attention spans are shorter than ever – especially when we’re on the Internet. People want to be seen, heard and understood… before they’ll give you their precious time and attention.

The temptation is to have your website be all about you and the service you provide. Uh oh… that’s a miss. Guess who will be attracted by that… people who already know, like and trust you and who are already “initiated” into the value of your professional service.

But you want to attract a steady stream of new clients through your website – people who have had little or no exposure to you yet. That’s how you build a robust list of prospects that become your future clients!

So… what should your website be about? The home page should speak to the specific people you’re targeting — right where they live — about their biggest challenges, their pain, their hopes and most desired tangible outcomes. It should inspire, motivate, educate them and transform their thinking. It should build your credibility and be the start of a beautiful relationship.

The Secret is Out: People With the Biggest Lists Don’t Make the Most Money

The results are in! After discussing the difference between EXTERNAL and INTERNAL marketing in this video, and sending out a survey, I received almost 300 responses from coaches, consultants, information entrepreneurs, and service professionals.

As a reminder:

  • “internal marketing” includes: Newsletter, Direct Mail, Teleclasses, Video, Sales Letter, Strategy Sessions, Follow-up, Education, Community Building
  • “external marketing” includes: Advertising, Searching Engines, Networking, Social Media, Article Publishing, Speaking, Podcast, Referrals, Joint Ventures, Press Releases, Expert Interviews.

Here’s what I discovered:

Under $30K Earners

  • 77% of people have a mailing list under 500 subscribers
  • 26% of people said they focus 10% of their time on “internal marketing” and 10% on “external marketing”, although just as many said they focus 50% on “external marketing”.
  • The overall HAPPINESS level of people who made less than $30K in 2011 is on average 3.5 out of 10. (More money can definitely bring more happiness and reduce stress!)

Six-Figure Earners

  • 9% of respondents made 6 figures in 2011
  • 30.8% of people who made over $100,000 in 2011 have a list of 1000-3000 subscribers – NOT BAD!
  • A more shocking fact I discovered: 41.7% of people who made over $250,000 in 2011 have a list of under 500 subscribers.
  • According to this survey, 35% of six-figure earners focus approximately 30% of their marketing on “internal marketing” strategies and 65% on “external marketing”
  • The overall HAPPINESS level of six-figure earners is on average 7.5 out of 10.

So what I see from the survey (and from reading 100+ comments!) is that it’s important to do BOTH, internal and external marketing! I also confirmed that income level is NOT proportional to list size. Many of the comments from six-figure earners mentioned “more leverage” and “more delegation” on their wish list, but were overall happy with their business.

Something that survey results did NOT show, but I could feel it from reading all the comments, was that people in the “under $30K” income level are very excited and optimistic about their growth opportunities! They’re just starting out and can’t WAIT to grow their ventures!

I interviewed Laura about her program, and would like to share her answers with you here. If you’re working on your own membership-based program, this will be very inspiring to you!

Laura, how did you come up with the idea for your membership program?

I started a boot camp specializing in training women between the ages of 35 and 55. It turned out that most of the women that showed up were moms. They weren’t young women who just had great bodies. They were women who couldn’t relate to, or didn’t feel comfortable with the ultra-fit trainers.

I was really surprised that every single of one of them voiced exactly the same problem…their waistline was expanding. With all the diet advice they were getting, they didn’t have time to apply all the popular diets. Every diet they did try was not working, and on top of that it wouldn’t work for their kids and husband. So they just felt stuck with their stubborn weight. And all these women were asking me about these specific issues as they grabbed their belly to show me the stubborn problem areas.

I saw there was a need for better information because I was able to solve this exact problem for myself. So I wanted to help these women get the answers that I got…that working out more and eating less is not the answer, and counting calories is a waste of time…and these things alone will cause you to store stubborn fat forever.

Then I learned about eating for your metabolic type, re-balancing my hormones with simple foods that are already in my kitchen, and exercising for my body type and my own individual fitness level, that’s when my body began to change and what caused me to finally lose my stubborn fat. So that is how I came up with the idea for this program.

How is it delivered: weekly? video/audio? is it micro-membership? or coaching club?

TheStubbornFatLossSolution.com is a 16-week micro-membership program delivered in weekly installments. Customers receive a new lesson every week in the form of an audio lesson, as well as a downloadable action guide. In addition, we have bi-weekly live coaching calls that will be recorded, a members’ only forum, a recipe section, and a resources/shopping section.

What platform are you using for this membership program?

We are using Digital Access Pass to drip-feed the content weekly to the customer.

What’s the pricing?

We were taking your Membership Program Secrets, and we wanted to follow your advice. When you did the module on pricing we created a price within the range you provided. Later on you suggested extending the time frame to four months to give more time for implementing our program, but also to extend the idea of recurring revenue. So we extended the length of the program from 3 to 4 months, and spread the price out as well. We will test different prices over time to see which brings the most revenue. But for now, we set it at $497 for a one-time payment, or $147 a month for four months.

Laura and her business partner Yegyan introduced their program at my Recurring Revenue Revolution event last December, and it was great to see the response to their program – people really got it and were excited!
